NEW 4K RESTORATION

“This light, breezy 1955 heist film is probably the least characteristic movie Jean-Pierre Melville ever made. It replaces his sternly fatalistic philosophizing with a benign, genuinely comic spirit, and his rigidly classical style yields to a pleasant informality. Yet the characters—professional gamblers, craftsmanly safecrackers—and their code are recognizably Melvillian, and the portrait of Pigalle after dark is superbly evocative and romantic. The plot—a gambler on a streak of bad luck plans the robbery of the Deauville casino—is largely lifted from The Asphalt Jungle, though the suspense has been wittily inverted: we're made to hope that the robbery doesn't come off.” (Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader)

“A flambeur is a gambler, and Bob cannot pass by a game without sizing up the odds or joining in. Open a closet door in his apartment and you find a slot machine, for his personal use. Like Dracula, he sleeps by day and comes alive at night, craving the blood of a bet. That is why the movie begins in the ravishing sorrow of dawn, in Montmartre and Pigalle, with the street lamps going off.” (Anthony Lane, The New Yorker)

“A love letter to Paris at a very special time of night – the hours between darkness and dawn when the signs above the all-night cafés switch off and the morning light gradually seeps into the narrow street." (David Denby, The New Yorker)

“The Montmartre district of Paris, with its girlie shows, smoky bars, floating card games, and population of crooks, prostitutes, and tolerant policemen – the Parisian underworld – never again looked quite as cozy and romantic as it did in the lyrical predawn light of Bob.” (Dave Kehr)

“The cinematic birth of the cool." (J. Hoberman)
